Me vs. We

Bens Place - Five Streams eco community.

Imagine two intersecting circles. The left circle represents “me” and right circle represents “we.” A community must have these two components.

Firstly, it requires that each family have the ability to be totally independent if they choose. This is the “me” circle. In the Ringing Cedars books, Anastasia advises that each family have a domain that is 1ha in size. Although we do not specifically follow Anastasia’s principles at Five Streams, we happily adopt this concept. Put simply, the idea of 1ha domains is sheer genius. 1ha is just big enough for a family to grow their own food, have a house or two, and not have to talk to anyone if they do not want to. But… it is also just small enough to allow community to develop naturally. You can walk to your neighbours, share with them and commune with them without having to pay toll fees.

Community, Such A Simple Thing.

View from the main house - Five Streams eco community.

Today, I am going to attempt the extraordinary. I am going to try and answer the question: why are there are so few sustainable communities? If the concept is so great, then why isn’t everyone doing it? Why are there so few traces of success in this field?

It is because there is no legal structure in existence that supports a model for sustainable community. That is why there is so much talk about community but not much community. Yes, we all hear the inner call screaming for us to live and work with the land, but almost nobody actually does anything about it. Continue reading

What Is A Community?

Creating the Stone Labrynth - Five Streams eco community.

Hi and thank you for following the progress of our community. Our first two landing parties have moved onto Five Streams and an interesting dynamic between the core group members has evolved. This has allowed me to put into words the fundamental structure of the community.

Dealing with the administrative headache of starting-up a community is offset by the angelic act of choosing one’s domain. Where specifically on this land do I want to live? [Note that I use the word “domain” with reference to Anastasia’s “kin’s domains” – they are family plots of land embracing permaculture principles that stay in one's family for generations.]

In essence:

We are a community of independent individuals, couples and families. Our community will grow, and be built around these FAMILY DOMAINS. Continue reading

Money & Costs

Tractors are costly but necessary - Five Streams eco community.

If you still have faith in our legal and political system, and honestly believe that the global monetary cartel is fair and secure, then perhaps our approach to community is not suitable for you.

Does the community use money?

Money in the community works exactly like it does now. We are not trying to create a new system of trade, although people are welcome to barter and share their produce and skills.

Members of the community will either create their own business on the land (such as organic farming, bee keeping, hospitality or whatever business that works for them), or run a remote business form their new home. Those with businesses on the land own and run their business outright. One person is not going to work all day for R104.50 and then be forced to share it with another 37 lazy sods smoking dope on the hill. Continue reading

About the land

The gorge from a distance - Five Streams eco community.

  1. Water! A completely uncontaminated water source is right on the property. There are also many streams and an existing borehole. Water is a very abundant resource.
  2. Proximity. The entrance is off an excellent tar road. While it is only 20 minutes from Nottingham Road (an upmarket town), it is also closer to the Drakensberg. This happy medium allows us to be private, but still be close enough to mix with the toffs. The property is divided into two clear sections: a front-end close to the road (ideal for the commercial component of the community) and a back-end around the mountain which is secluded.
